Résumé de Verity

Colleen Hoover’s novel Verity is a psychological thriller centered on Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer who is hired to complete the remaining books in a bestselling series authored by Verity Crawford, who has been incapacitated by a severe injury. Lowen travels to the Crawford family’s Vermont home to review Verity’s notes and drafts, where she meets Verity’s husband, Jeremy, and their young son, Crew. The household is haunted by the recent deaths of the couple’s twin daughters, and the emotional strain is palpable. While searching Verity’s office, Lowen discovers an unpublished, hidden autobiography that paints a chillingly different portrait of Verity than her public persona. The manuscript details Verity’s alleged resentment toward motherhood, her obsessive love for Jeremy, and her possible involvement in the tragedies that have befallen the family. As Lowen reads further, she becomes entangled in a dangerous game of truth and deception, unsure whether the memoir is a factual confession or a calculated work of fiction designed to manipulate. Her growing attraction to Jeremy complicates matters, as does the unsettling possibility that Verity’s condition may not be as dire as it appears. The novel unfolds through Lowen’s first-person narration, excerpts from Verity’s manuscript, and a final, ambiguous letter that forces readers to question everything they have read. The story explores themes of obsession, jealousy, and the unreliable nature of storytelling, set against the claustrophobic backdrop of a isolated family home harboring dark secrets.
