Résumé de The Alchemist

A shepherd named Santiago dreams of treasure buried near the Egyptian pyramids, and when a mysterious old king urges him to follow that dream, he sells his flock and crosses the sea in search of it. What begins as a literal journey soon becomes something far stranger, a pilgrimage through deserts and marketplaces where every stranger might be a teacher and every setback a hidden instruction. Along the way he meets an Englishman obsessed with alchemy, a desert woman named Fatima who reshapes his understanding of love, and a rider in black who may hold the secret of turning lead into gold. Paulo Coelho tells this story in spare, parable-like prose, blending folk wisdom, mysticism, and simple adventure into a fable about listening to what he calls your Personal Legend, the destiny you were always meant to pursue. The novel speaks most directly to anyone standing at a crossroads, restless in a safe life, torn between obligation and desire, or quietly wondering whether the dream they abandoned years ago is still worth chasing. Its appeal lies in that universality. First published in Portuguese in 1988 and slow to find readers, it spread by word of mouth, recommended from friend to friend and hand to hand, until it became one of the best-selling books in history, translated into dozens of languages. Readers return to it not for complex plotting but for its gentle insistence that the universe conspires on behalf of those who dare to act, and that the treasure we seek often waits closer than we imagine.
