Résumé de The Woman in White

"The Woman in White" by Wilkie Collins is a landmark 19th-century mystery novel that combines elements of gothic horror and social commentary within a complex narrative structure. The story unfolds through multiple perspectives, primarily through the voices of Walter Hartright, a drawing teacher, and several letters and accounts from other characters. This epistolary framework allows for a rich development of the plot and deepens the intrigue surrounding the characters and their motives. Set in Victorian England, the novel opens with Walter encountering a mysterious woman dressed in white on a moonlit night. This chance meeting leads him to become entangled in a web of deception, resurrection, and madness involving the beautiful and vulnerable Laura Fairlie and her clandestine connections to the sinister Count Fosco. The contrasting locations, from the tranquil rural landscapes to the foreboding atmosphere of eerie manors, enhance the novel's suspenseful tone and thematic depth. Collins masterfully explores themes such as the fragility of identity, the oppression of women, and the encroaching threat of male authority. The duality of appearances versus reality is a critical motif, where characters are often not what they seem. The novel comments on the societal constraints faced by women in the 19th century, particularly in the character of Laura, who becomes a pawn in the machinations of more powerful figures. As the plot unfolds, revelations about familial ties, madness, and conspiracy culminate in a gripping narrative that keeps readers engaged until the last pages. "The Woman in White" stands as a pioneering work of detective fiction, reflecting both the anxieties of its time and Collins's innovative narrative techniques.
