Résumé de The Sign of Four

Arthur Conan Doyle's second novel featuring Sherlock Holmes, *The Sign of Four*, plunges readers into a captivating mystery originating from colonial India and unfolding in the labyrinthine streets of Victorian London. The story begins with the enigmatic Miss Mary Morstan seeking the counsel of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson at their 221B Baker Street residence. Her father, Captain Arthur Morstan, disappeared ten years prior under mysterious circumstances. For the past six years, Mary has anonymously received a large, lustrous pearl annually, and now an anonymous letter invites her to a clandestine meeting, hinting at an injustice. This invitation leads Holmes, Watson, and Mary into a convoluted tale involving a hidden treasure, a pact made in British India during the Sepoy Mutiny, and a clandestine agreement between four disparate individuals, one of whom is a fearsome Andamanese islander. The core narrative framework revolves around a complex web of deceit, greed, and retribution connected to the legendary Agra treasure. The elusive nature of the 'sign of four' and the pursuit of justice for Mary form the central threads of the adventure. Holmes employs his characteristic deductive prowess, meticulous observation of seemingly insignificant details, and a systematic approach to evidence. His 'science of deduction' is showcased through analyses of various clues, from footprint impressions to chemical residues, often performed in his Baker Street laboratory. He even utilizes his network of street urchins, the Baker Street Irregulars, for intelligence gathering across London's underworld. The narrative also includes a brief, factual depiction of Holmes's recreational use of cocaine, a distinctive element of his character in the early stories. Dr. Watson narrates the adventure, providing a grounding human perspective to Holmes's brilliant but often detached intellect. His observations chronicle the pursuit through London's fog-shrouded docks and down the River Thames, culminating in a thrilling chase. Crucially, *The Sign of Four* also develops Watson’s personal life, depicting the blossoming of his affection for Miss Morstan amidst the thrilling pursuit of justice and the elusive treasure. The novel masterfully blends exotic backstories with classic detective work, cementing the iconic duo's place in literary history.
