Résumé de The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo centers on a reclusive Hollywood icon who finally agrees to tell the truth about her life. The book opens with Monique Grant, a relatively unknown magazine writer in New York, being unexpectedly chosen by Evelyn Hugo to conduct her final interview and pen her authorized biography. Flattered but suspicious, Monique moves into Evelyn’s apartment to record the star’s story, which unfolds across seven marriages and roughly five decades of American fame. The novel’s distinctive structure alternates between Monique’s present-day narration and Evelyn’s first-person account, framed explicitly as “the seven husbands” but revealing that the men were often covers, allies, or bargains rather than true loves. Evelyn’s career begins in 1950s Los Angeles, where she reinvents herself from a poor Cuban American girl into a platinum-blonde screen siren, navigating studio control, the closet, and the eras of McCarthyism and the AIDS crisis. Her closest relationship is with Monique’s own family history, which gradually connects the journalist to Evelyn in ways neither initially admits. Reid uses the novel to examine how women build and protect their own power, how public image is manufactured, and how race, bisexuality, and ambition shaped mid-century Hollywood. The seven husbands—Ernie, Don, Mick, Rex, Harry, Max, and Robert—each mark a phase of Evelyn’s strategy for survival and stardom, not a simple romantic tally. The book became a bestseller and later a Netflix film, praised for its twisty, confessional storytelling and its portrait of a woman who refuses to apologize for the choices that made her a legend.
