Résumé de The Paris Apartment

The Paris Apartment is a 2022 psychological thriller by Lucy Foley, set primarily in a grand but decaying residential building at 12 rue des Amants in Paris. The novel follows Jess Hadley, a British woman in her late twenties who arrives in Paris to stay with her half-brother Ben, a journalist who has been living in the city. When she reaches his apartment, Ben is missing, and the building’s residents—each occupying a different floor of the converted townhouse—prove evasive and suspicious. Foley structures the narrative through alternating first-person chapters narrated by Jess and several of the building’s inhabitants, including Sophie, the elegant wife of a wealthy expatriate; Mimi, a troubled young woman; Nick, a British tenant; and the building’s concierge. This multi-voice framework lets each resident reveal partial truths while concealing their own motives, and each chapter is tied to a specific apartment or floor, reinforcing the building’s claustrophobic hierarchy. Jess’s investigation drives the present-day plot as she pieces together Ben’s last known movements, his research into the building’s owner, and the residents’ interconnected secrets. The novel explores themes of voyeurism, class resentment, and the contrast between Paris’s glamorous surface and its hidden networks of power and corruption. The locked-building setting functions almost as a character, with its creaking stairwells, coded entry system, and surveillance culture heightening the sense of entrapment. Foley, previously known for The Hunting Party and The Guest List, employs a similar closed-circle mystery structure here, but shifts from an isolated rural estate to an urban apartment house. The Paris Apartment became a New York Times bestseller and was praised for its atmospheric pacing and unreliable narrators.
