Résumé de The Long Haul

Jeff Kinney’s "The Long Haul," the ninth installment in the popular Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, thrusts the ever-reluctant middle-schooler Greg Heffley and his family into the ultimate vacation nightmare: a summer road trip. Presented in Kinney’s distinctive hybrid format of diary entries coupled with simple, yet expressive, cartoon illustrations, the narrative captures Greg’s perspective as he endures what his mother, Susan, envisions as a wholesome, screen-free family bonding experience. The core premise sees the Heffleys – Greg, his parents Frank and Susan, and brothers Rodrick and Manny – crammed into a minivan for an extended journey. Susan’s well-intentioned but often misguided attempts to create lasting family memories clash spectacularly with Greg’s cynical outlook, Rodrick’s apathy, Frank’s quiet resignation, and Manny’s increasingly chaotic behavior. The trip is plagued by a series of comically disastrous detours and mishaps. These include an unexpected stop at a pig farm that results in the temporary adoption of a pet pig, accidental encounters with a rival vacationing family that escalate into competition, and various food-related predicaments. Kinney meticulously details the unique challenges of confined family travel: the battle for personal space, the endless bickering, and the parents' struggle to maintain order amidst the escalating chaos. Greg’s entries highlight his persistent efforts to avoid responsibility, his observations of his family’s quirks, and his attempts to find any semblance of peace or entertainment despite the mounting stressors. The search for a specific fast-food restaurant, fueled by the promise of a rare toy, becomes a recurring, almost mythical quest that drives parts of their journey. Ultimately, "The Long Haul" is a relatable and humorous exploration of the trials and tribulations inherent in a family vacation gone awry, underscoring Greg Heffley's enduring plight as a perpetually put-upon kid navigating the absurdities of his world.
