Résumé de The Long Cosmos

"The Long Cosmos," co-authored by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter, is the fifth installment in the innovative Long Earth series, which explores a multitude of parallel Earths and the implications of their existence. In this novel, the story continues to delve into themes of humanity's adaptive nature and the moral quandaries that arise from technological advancements. Set across various Earths, the narrative focuses on the consequences of the discovery of the "Long Earth," where people can step between worlds using a device called the "Stepper." The protagonists include Joshua Valienté, a recurring character throughout the series, who grapples with his identity and purpose as he navigates these alternate realities. The introduction of new characters, such as the enigmatic alien presence known as the "Next," expands the plot's complexity and raises questions about life beyond Earth. The book examines the societal changes brought about by the Long Earth phenomenon, including new communities, challenges of governance, and the potential for both collaboration and conflict among divergent human offshoots. Distinctive frameworks in "The Long Cosmos" involve exploring the philosophical implications of infinite worlds and how this affects human existence, relationships, and morality. The notion of "stepping," which allows individuals to explore entirely different environments, serves as a vehicle for discussing adaptability and the human condition. The narrative also incorporates scientific ideas about evolution and the progression of civilization, emphasizing the interplay between environment and societal development. As the story unfolds, characters embark on experiments to understand both their own evolution and the nature of the Long Earth itself, creating a rich tapestry of exploration that challenges the readers' perceptions of reality and existence. The novel masterfully intertwines speculative fiction with philosophical inquiries, offering a thought-provoking glimpse into the myriad possibilities of life across the multiverse.
