Résumé de The hidden kingdom [graphic novel]

Barry Deutsch's *The Hidden Kingdom [graphic novel]* continues the adventures of Mirka, a young Orthodox Jewish girl living in the whimsical, medieval-inspired village of Hereville. This third installment in the acclaimed *Hereville* series delves into Mirka’s personal struggles while weaving a fantastical new mystery beneath her very feet. The central conflict for Mirka revolves around the impending arrival of a new sibling, as her stepmother, Fruma, is pregnant. This development creates a profound sense of unease and jealousy in Mirka, who fears being overshadowed or forgotten within her bustling family, which already includes two older stepsisters and a baby brother. Mirka's internal turmoil takes an unexpected external turn when she discovers a hidden kingdom nestled beneath Hereville. This secret world is home to a community of tiny, magical people, unseen by the village’s adult inhabitants. The inhabitants of this miniature realm are facing their own existential crisis, requiring Mirka’s unique blend of bravery, resourcefulness, and occasional impulsiveness to help them. Her quest involves navigating the intricate customs and challenges of these minuscule folk, often mirroring or deepening her understanding of her own family dynamics. The narrative skillfully juxtaposes the everyday realities of Mirka's Orthodox Jewish life – complete with Sabbath preparations, synagogue attendance, and family meals – with the extraordinary demands of her magical adventures. Deutsch masterfully explores themes of family, change, and finding one’s place through Mirka’s dual journey. As Mirka grapples with making room in her heart and home for a new baby, she simultaneously learns about community, leadership, and compromise within the hidden kingdom. The book’s distinctive blend of modern sensibility, Jewish folklore, and classic fantasy elements offers a rich and thoughtful exploration of growing up and accepting new beginnings in a world where magic and faith coexist.
