Throughout the narrative, Tan introduces various characters who each represent different facets of the immigrant experience. These encounters offer insight into the resilience and adaptability of people from diverse backgrounds, emphasizing themes of community and support among the displaced. The book features an array of visual metaphors, such as the use of whimsical yet daunting landscapes, to illustrate the protagonist’s journey—both physically and emotionally.
