Résumé de The Alienist

"The Alienist" by Caleb Carr is a historical novel set in New York City during the late 19th century, specifically in the year 1896. The narrative revolves around Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, an alienist, which is a term used at the time to describe a psychiatrist. Kreizler is enlisted to assist the police in solving a gruesome murder case involving a child prostitute. The novel intricately weaves together psychological theories, criminal investigation, and the sociocultural context of the era, showcasing the burgeoning field of criminal psychology. The story unfolds through a distinctive framework that employs a first-person narrative from John Schuyler Moore, a journalist and Kreizler's close associate. Together, they form a team that includes a diverse cast of characters, such as forensic scientists and police officers, who delve into the mind of the killer. A significant aspect of "The Alienist" is its exploration of the psychological profiles of both the victims and the murderer, as Kreizler conducts experiments to understand their motivations and behaviors. Carr effectively incorporates historical details, making the setting a character in its own right, and highlights the challenges faced by early forensic science. The chapters delve into themes such as class disparity, the complexities of mental illness, and the struggle between scientific inquiry and societal norms. Kreizler's pursuit of knowledge not only aims to uncover the truth behind the murder but also sheds light on the darker corners of humanity. As the tension mounts, "The Alienist" invites readers to contemplate the nature of evil and the emerging understanding of the human psyche in a rapidly evolving world.
