Résumé de Solitaire

Alice Oseman’s debut novel, *Solitaire*, immerses readers in the introspective and often cynical world of Tori Spring, a British teenager navigating the tumultuous final years of high school at Higgs School for Girls. Tori feels profoundly disconnected from her peers, her family—including her younger brother Charlie Spring, a recurring character in Oseman's later works—and her own emotions, often retreating into her personal blog where she chronicles her detached observations. Her already disaffected existence takes an unexpected turn with the arrival of Michael Holden, a new, eccentric student at Truham Grammar, and the sudden emergence of "Solitaire," an anonymous online blog and game that begins to send cryptic messages and challenges to both Tori and Michael. Referred to as "participants," Tori and Michael find themselves drawn into a series of "experiments" orchestrated by the enigmatic "Solitaire." These challenges initially appear innocuous, ranging from mundane tasks to social directives, but they gradually escalate in intensity and psychological pressure, forcing Tori to confront uncomfortable truths about her friendships, her family dynamics, and her own deeply buried feelings. The narrative unfolds entirely through Tori's first-person perspective, providing an unfiltered, raw glimpse into her struggles with depression, anxiety, and self-harm, meticulously detailing her internal monologue and cynical worldview as she grapples with loneliness and a sense of pervasive apathy. *Solitaire* is not merely a high school drama but a sharp exploration of mental health, the complexities of adolescent friendships, and the profound impact of online communities and anonymity. It dissects how seemingly harmless online interactions can quickly devolve into darker territory, affecting real-world relationships and personal well-being. While featuring cameos from familiar characters like Charlie and his boyfriend Nick Nelson, the novel firmly establishes its unique tone and focus, centering on Tori's singular journey to understand herself and the unsettling motivations behind the "Solitaire" game, ultimately portraying the isolating yet universal experience of growing up and seeking connection in an increasingly digital world.
