Résumé de Shake hands with the devil

"Shake Hands with the Devil," authored by Roméo Dallaire, recounts the harrowing experiences of the Canadian general who served as force commander of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda (UNAMIR) during the 1994 Rwandan genocide. The book presents a detailed and personal narrative of Dallaire’s attempts to intervene in a conflict that spiraled into mass slaughter. Through a series of poignant reflections, he explores the ethical dilemmas faced by those in power, the limitations of international intervention, and the devastating consequences of inaction. The narrative is structured around Dallaire's memories, starting from his preparations to oversee a peacekeeping mission to the horrifying realities as violence erupted. Dallaire delves into the organizational flaws within the United Nations and highlights how political apathy, compounded by a lack of resources and clear directives, crippled efforts to halt the violence. He articulates his frustration with the diplomatic failures that allowed the genocide to occur while providing insight into the psychological toll experienced by soldiers and leaders confronted with such extreme human suffering. Dallaire discusses the moral responsibility of the international community, emphasizing the haunting question of whether sufficient action could have prevented the atrocities. Throughout the book, he grapples with themes of guilt, trauma, and a deep commitment to remembering the victims, ultimately advocating for a more decisive and humane response to crises in the future. "Shake Hands with the Devil" serves as a deeply engaging and introspective historical account, bridging personal narrative with broader reflections on humanitarian intervention and international relations in the late 20th century.
