Résumé de Guns, Germs, and Steel

In Guns, Germs, and Steel, Jared Diamond asks why history unfolded so unevenly across continents, why Eurasian societies came to dominate globally rather than, say, Aboriginal Australians or sub-Saharan Africans. His answer, framed as "Yali's question" after a New Guinean politician, rejects racial or cultural superiority and instead points to environmental and geographical differences. The book's central argument is that crops and livestock available in a region, plus the east-west axis of Eurasia versus the north-south axes of Africa and the Americas, shaped which societies could develop agriculture, then surplus food, then specialists, writing, states, and technology. Diamond traces a chain of causation. Fertile Crescent agriculture arose early because of domesticable cereals like wheat and barley and large mammals such as sheep, goats, and cattle. Eurasian societies could spread these species and techniques along similar latitudes, while Africa's and the Americas' climates and geography slowed diffusion. Domesticated animals also transferred diseases like smallpox and measles to humans, giving Eurasians immunities that devastated populations elsewhere. Writing and metallurgy emerged from sedentary, food-producing societies with enough surplus to support non-farming elites. Later chapters compare specific regions: Polynesia's Chatham Islands versus Hawaii, the spread of Austronesian peoples, China's unification, and Africa's Bantu expansion. The final sections address why Europe, not China, colonized the world, citing Europe's fragmented geography and competition among states. Diamond's framework is materialist, not deterministic in a simple way, and he explicitly denies that any society was biologically superior. The book won a Pulitzer Prize and remains a widely debated synthesis of geography, biology, and history.
