Résumé de Only by Chance

"Only by Chance" by Betty Neels is a charming romance novel set against the backdrop of the English countryside and the picturesque canals of Amsterdam. The story revolves around the life of the protagonist, Miss Francesca (Frankie) Townsend, a devoted, practical woman who works as a nurse in a London hospital. Frankie has always put others first, primarily focusing on her responsibilities and her patients’ needs rather than her own desires for love and companionship. The narrative takes a turn when Frankie unexpectedly encounters a handsome Dutch doctor named Doctor Henk van Halen during a chance encounter that alters the course of her life. Henk, who exudes both confidence and a certain mystery, becomes intrigued by Frankie’s selfless spirit. As the two navigate their growing attraction, the novel explores themes of chance encounters, personal growth, and the complexities of love—hallmarks of Neels' writing style. Each chapter gradually unfolds the nuances of their relationship, emphasizing the contrast between their social standings and personal aspirations. While Frankie is humble and content with her straightforward life, Henk's background as a successful physician presents complications that challenge their connection. Neels artfully weaves elements of fate and coincidence throughout the novel, illustrating how love often finds its way in the most unexpected circumstances. With its rich descriptions of settings ranging from London’s hectic hospital life to the serene beauty of the Dutch landscape, "Only by Chance" immerses readers in an engaging romantic journey. This novel not only captures the essence of British charm but also reflects Betty Neels' signature style of crafting heartfelt stories filled with warmth, humor, and the unpredictability of love.
