Résumé de Lincoln in the Bardo

"Lincoln in the Bardo" by George Saunders is a novel that delves into the themes of grief, loss, and the afterlife through an innovative narrative structure. Set in 1862, during the midst of the American Civil War, the story unfolds in a supernatural graveyard known as the Bardo, a Tibetan term referring to the transitional state between death and rebirth. The novel explores the tragic loss of President Abraham Lincoln's son, Willie, who dies at a young age. As Lincoln visits Willie’s crypt, the narrative shifts to a collective voice of various deceased characters who inhabit the Bardo, presenting a unique tapestry of perspectives and voices. The main protagonists include the ghosts of the Bardo, such as Hans Vollman, a newly deceased man who is enamored with his unfinished life, and the Reverend Everly Thomas, who is wrestling with his own failures. Through their interactions, the novel examines the nature of existence, the complexities of the human experience, and the varied ways individuals cope with their mortality. Saunders employs a mix of historical fact and fantastical elements, interspersing passages from historical texts and speeches to create a layered narrative that reflects the distress of a nation at war and the personal sorrow of Lincoln as a father. "Lincoln in the Bardo" is notable for its experimental form, using short vignettes and disjointed dialogue that immerses the reader into the cacophony of voices in the Bardo. This structure invites reflection on the themes of compassion and the impermanence of life, challenging conventions of storytelling while posing profound questions about love, loss, and the ties that bind us even beyond death. The novel won the Man Booker Prize in 2017, underscoring its impact and resonance in contemporary literature.
