Résumé de In the Garden of Beasts

In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson is a work of narrative nonfiction that chronicles the experiences of William E. Dodd, a mild-mannered history professor from the University of Chicago, who served as the United States ambassador to Germany from 1933 to 1937. The book is structured around Dodd’s tenure and that of his free-spirited daughter, Martha, who accompanied him to Berlin, using their personal letters, diaries, and diplomatic dispatches to reconstruct the couple’s gradual awakening to the brutality of the Nazi regime. Larson’s distinctive framework juxtaposes the ordinary social life of the American expatriate community—teas, parties, and romances—against the escalating persecution of Jews, the purge of the SA in the Night of the Long Knives, and the consolidation of Hitler’s power. Rather than a sweeping diplomatic history, the book focuses on the cognitive dissonance of its protagonists: Dodd initially believes he can reason with Nazi officials and even admires aspects of German order, while Martha becomes romantically involved with several men, including a Gestapo official and a Soviet spy. The narrative tracks their slow disillusionment as they witness book burnings, boycotts of Jewish businesses, and the regime’s suppression of dissent, all while the U.S. State Department remains indifferent. Larson does not invent events; he relies on documented evidence to show how an ordinary academic and his daughter became reluctant witnesses to the early machinery of genocide. The book argues that appeasement and professional caution allowed the diplomatic corps to underestimate the threat.
