Résumé de Good Omens

"Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch" by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman is a satirical comic fantasy novel that plunges readers into the chaotic preparations for Armageddon. The premise revolves around the impending end of the world, brought about by the birth of the Antichrist, but a slight administrative error sees the infernal infant swapped with a mundane baby, resulting in the true Antichrist, Adam Young, being raised in a quiet English village, entirely unaware of his apocalyptic destiny. At the heart of the narrative are Aziraphale, a fastidious angel and part-time rare book dealer, and Crowley, a demon with a penchant for an old Bentley and a rock-and-roll lifestyle. Having lived on Earth for six millennia and grown rather fond of humanity and its eccentricities, the unlikely duo decide to secretly collaborate to prevent the Apocalypse, much to the consternation of their respective heavenly and hellish superiors. Their efforts involve a series of bumbling, often hilarious attempts to influence Adam, whose latent powers begin to manifest in peculiar ways, subtly reshaping the world around him through the sheer force of his pre-teen will. The book weaves together multiple converging storylines, introducing a motley cast of characters including the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (updated for the modern age), a young witch named Anathema Device, and the last surviving member of the Witchfinder Army, Newton Pulsifer. Pratchett and Gaiman masterfully explore themes of free will versus divine/demonic plans, the blurry lines between good and evil, and the absurdity of bureaucracy in both celestial and infernal realms. The novel's distinctive charm lies in its blend of the mundane and the miraculous, presenting a high-stakes cosmic conflict through the lens of very British sensibilities and dry wit, ultimately suggesting that humanity itself might hold the key to its own salvation, or damnation.
