Résumé de Gaudy night

"Gaudy Night" is a detective novel by Dorothy L. Sayers, set in the inspirational backdrop of Oxford University. The story follows the intelligent and independent Harriet Vane, a mystery writer and former student at the university. The plot takes shape during a Gaudy—a festive reunion for alumni—when Harriet is drawn back to her alma mater, Shrewsbury College. However, the reunion is overshadowed by an unsettling series of events, including mysterious anonymous letters and vandalism targeting the women in the college, provoking concerns about the nature of femininity and the place of women in academia. Sayers delves deeply into themes of feminism, intellectual freedom, and the challenges faced by women in a male-dominated society. Central to the narrative is the philosophical underpinning of women's education, showcasing the evolving role of women in higher education during the early 20th century. Through Harriet's interactions with other women and her intellectual tussles, Sayers spotlights the tension between tradition and progress, cultivating a distinct exploration of women's lives in that era. The novel unfolds with Harriet becoming an amateur sleuth, inadvertently placing herself at the center of a complex mystery that intertwines her personal and professional life. The involvement of Lord Peter Wimsey, Harriet’s love interest and a prominent detective figure in Sayers' oeuvre, adds layers to the narrative; he represents both support and societal expectations faced by Harriet. As the mystery complicates, Sayers not only crafts a captivating whodunit but also examines the moral and ethical questions surrounding love, loyalty, and the quest for truth within the collegiate setting. "Gaudy Night" stands out as a thoughtful commentary on both crime and the broader societal implications of the roles of women in the 1930s.
