『Works (Carrie / Night Shift / 'Salem's Lot / Shining)』要約

Stephen King's "Works (Carrie / Night Shift / 'Salem's Lot / Shining)" compiles four of the author's seminal early texts, offering readers a comprehensive immersion into the foundational works that established his reputation as a master of modern horror. This substantial volume presents three full-length novels alongside King's critically acclaimed debut collection of short fiction, showcasing the breadth of his thematic concerns and character-driven narratives from the 1970s. The collection opens with *Carrie*, King's first published novel. It delves into the harrowing tale of Carrie White, an ostracized and religiously tormented high school student who discovers she possesses potent telekinetic abilities. Her journey culminates in a catastrophic prom night after relentless bullying. Following this is *Night Shift*, King's inaugural short story collection, which gathers twenty diverse tales of terror. This volume showcases King's versatility, exploring everything from supernatural monsters and psychological dread to science fiction and unique takes on everyday fears, demonstrating his early command of the short form. Next, the collection features *'Salem's Lot*, a chilling vampire novel set in the seemingly idyllic small town of Jerusalem's Lot, Maine. When writer Ben Mears returns to his childhood home, he uncovers an ancient evil slowly consuming the townspeople, transforming them into the undead. The compilation concludes with *The Shining*, a cornerstone of psychological horror. This novel follows Jack Torrance, an aspiring writer and recovering alcoholic, who takes a winter caretaker position at the isolated Overlook Hotel with his wife Wendy and psychic son Danny. As the hotel's malevolent presence amplifies Jack's demons, Danny's "shining" abilities reveal the hotel's terrifying history and present dangers. This "Works" edition provides a powerful testament to King's enduring influence, presenting a curated selection of his early masterpieces that define the modern horror genre.
