《Working》摘要

In "Working," Robert A. Caro offers a compelling look into the extensive and intricate process behind his celebrated biographical works, particularly his examinations of political figures such as Lyndon B. Johnson and Robert Moses. This book provides readers with an insider's perspective on the life of a biographer, detailing Caro's unique methodologies, extensive research practices, and the personal commitment necessary to craft his narratives. Caro outlines the concept of “the power broker” and the profound implications of political influence in shaping society, thereby emphasizing the importance of context in biography. The narrative unfolds through various chapters that explore Caro’s experiences, ranging from conducting interviews with notable figures to sifting through archives, often requiring him to walk the streets of New York City and other locales key to his subjects' lives. One of the most distinctive frameworks he discusses is the meticulous nature of primary-source research—Caro frequently revisits the locations tied to his subjects, providing a vivid sense of place that enhances the biography’s authenticity. Through anecdotes and reflections on his challenges in capturing the essence of power and its wielders, Caro reveals the ethical dilemmas faced when trying to portray historical figures faithfully. The book also touches upon the relentless nature of his quest for the truth and how it shapes the storytelling process. Overall, "Working" stands as both a memoir of his journey as a biographer and a meditation on the dynamics of political power, encouraging readers to consider the profound impact of historical narratives on contemporary society.
