《With a Tangled Skein》摘要

With a Tangled Skein is a fantasy novel by Piers Anthony, part of his larger series known as the Incarnations of Immortality. This book specifically explores themes of destiny, free will, and the nature of time, weaving them intricately into its narrative. The story primarily revolves around the character of the protagonist, a woman named E. A. A gorgeous sorceress with a complex past, E. A. is united with other significant figures from mythology and fantasy as they navigate the challenges posed by their immortal existences. In a unique twist, Anthony integrates the concept of the fates and their control over human destinies, which is represented symbolically through the metaphor of a skein—a tangle of threads representing the interconnected lives of individuals. As E. A. interacts with various incarnations, including Death, Time, and Fate, the reader is taken through a fantastical journey that questions the essence of existence and how choices shape an individual’s path. Setting the stage in a rich, vividly imagined world that blends elements of mythology and modernity, the novel presents multiple perspectives on life, love, and mortality. Each chapter delves into different aspects of the Incarnations, illuminating the unique roles they play in the universe. The experiments undertaken by the characters allow for an exploration of philosophical debates regarding morality, the impact of choices, and the interplay between fate and agency. While it is rooted in fantasy, With a Tangled Skein prompts readers to reflect on deeper questions about their own lives, making it a thought-provoking addition to Anthony's body of work.
