Саммари «Winter Garden»

Kristin Hannah’s novel Winter Garden centers on Meredith and Nina Whitson, two adult sisters whose lives have diverged sharply. Meredith stayed in Washington State to run the family apple orchard, while Nina became a roving war photojournalist. Their distant, cold mother, Anya, has long withheld her past, speaking only in fragments of a Russian fairy tale about a peasant girl, a prince, and a wicked stepmother. After their father’s death, he extracts a promise from Nina: get Anya to tell the real story. The novel unfolds in two intertwined strands. The contemporary narrative follows the sisters as they return to the orchard and press their mother for answers, straining their own fragile relationship. The historical strand, revealed through Anya’s account, moves to Leningrad during World War II and the Siege of Leningrad, tracing a young woman’s survival through starvation, loss, and the brutal winter of 1941–42. Hannah links the fairy tale’s motifs to Anya’s wartime experiences, making the story within a story a method of surviving trauma rather than mere whimsy. The book’s distinctive structure alternates between present-day orchard life and the siege, with the Russian tale acting as a recurring framework that gradually yields its meaning. Major themes include inherited grief, the limits of mother-daughter communication, and the tension between forgetting and bearing witness. Winter Garden is a stand-alone novel, not part of a series, and sits alongside Hannah’s other historical fiction such as The Nightingale. It is a dual-timeline family drama built around the Siege of Leningrad and one family’s silence.
