"We Hunt the Flame" by Hafsah Faizal is a captivating fantasy novel set in a richly imagined world inspired by ancient Arabia. The story unfolds in the land of Arawiya, once vibrant but now shrouded in darkness and danger due to a cursed forest and the rise of oppressive rulers. The narrative follows two main protagonists: Zafira, a skilled hunter who disguises herself as a man to provide for her family, and Nasir, the enigmatic prince of the Empire, who must balance his loyalty to his father with his own moral dilemmas. At the heart of the story is the quest for a fabled artifact, known as the Heart of the Forest, believed to have the power to restore magic to Arawiya. Zafira’s journey sets her on a perilous path as she embarks on a mission that will bring her face-to-face with not only the supernatural forces at play but with her own deeply held fears and the expectations of her society. Meanwhile, Nasir grapples with his role as an assassin for his tyrannical father, discovering that his identity is tied to the kingdom’s fate. The narrative explores themes of identity, sacrifice, and the struggle against oppression, skillfully intertwining Zafira and Nasir’s journeys as they confront their personal demons and learn to trust one another. With its strong character development and a richly layered world, "We Hunt the Flame" delves into the complexities of humanity, courage, and the fight for what is right in a time of despair.
