ملخص We Have Always Lived in the Castle

Shirley Jackson's "We Have Always Lived in the Castle" is a chilling and atmospheric novel, narrated by the eccentric eighteen-year-old Mary Katherine "Merricat" Blackwood. Merricat lives a cloistered existence with her agoraphobic older sister, Constance, and their ailing Uncle Julian in the ancestral Blackwood estate, perched on the edge of a hostile village. Six years prior, the rest of the Blackwood family perished from arsenic poisoning at dinner, a crime for which Constance was tried and acquitted, leaving the surviving trio as pariahs shunned by the locals. Merricat, with her idiosyncratic rituals, protective superstitions, and a worldview deeply shaped by a vivid imagination, acts as the family's fragile link to the outside world, enduring the villagers' scorn on her infrequent trips for groceries. Her distinctive narrative voice shapes the reader's perception of their hermetically sealed life and the lingering shadows of the past tragedy. Constance, a gifted homemaker, finds solace in domesticity and rarely leaves the house, while Uncle Julian is obsessed with compiling a disjointed memoir of the poisoning incident, often to the sisters' dismay. The sisters have meticulously constructed a delicate, self-sufficient sanctuary, designed to repel the outside world and preserve their unique bond. This precarious equilibrium is dramatically threatened by the sudden arrival of their charming, but manipulative, cousin Charles Blackwood. His presence destabilizes their carefully maintained reality, challenging Merricat's fierce loyalty to Constance and forcing a confrontation with their isolated past. Jackson masterfully uses the Blackwood family's unique circumstances to explore themes of ostracism, the nature of sanity, and the unsettling power of family bonds, all within a suspenseful narrative that questions who truly defines "normal" or "safe."
