《Two serpents rise》摘要

In "Two Serpents Rise," Max Gladstone explores a unique blend of fantasy and legal drama set in the city of Dresdengard, a vibrant metropolis that thrives on the tension between magic and technology. This novel is set within Gladstone's Craft Sequence, a series that elaborates on a world where deities are real and law intertwines with magical craft. The story follows the lives of two central characters, Caleb Altemoc and his partner, the enigmatic and ambitious priestess, who navigate the complexities of their personal and professional lives amid a looming threat to their city. Caleb, a risk management specialist for a powerful bank, is implicated in a plot that could destabilize the delicate balance between the city's magical practices and its financial institutions. The narrative delves into Caleb's struggle as he tries to uphold the law while simultaneously grappling with his conflicting loyalties, both to the bank and to his partner, whose ties to ancient powers complicate their relationship. The chapter framework shifts between various perspectives, allowing readers to witness the intricacies of law, faith, and ethics through the lens of the characters' experiences. Central themes include the interplay of tradition and modernity, as well as the exploration of power dynamics within their society. The novel also raises questions about the role of individuals in shaping legal systems and the moral repercussions of their actions. Ultimately, "Two Serpents Rise" is not only a vivid examination of a fantastical world but also a profound commentary on the nature of belief and the complexities of human relationships in the face of institutional pressure.
