《Turn Coat》摘要

Jim Butcher's "Turn Coat" is the eleventh captivating installment in The Dresden Files series, plunging its wizard private investigator, Harry Dresden, into a crisis that threatens the very fabric of the supernatural world's governing body. The novel's central premise challenges Harry to an unprecedented task: defending Donald Morgan, a formidable Warden of the White Council who has been Harry's relentless antagonist for years. Morgan, a rigid enforcer of magical law, stands accused of assassinating a senior Council member, LaFortier, a crime that, if proven, could ignite a devastating civil war among the world's most powerful wizards. Framed and with his life on the line, Morgan, against all expectations, seeks asylum and assistance from Harry. This forced alliance forms the backbone of the narrative, compelling Harry to navigate the treacherous political landscape of the White Council, where paranoia and suspicion run rampant. The investigation uncovers a far-reaching conspiracy, hinting at the manipulations of the shadowy Black Council and their Outsider allies, who aim to sow discord and exploit the White Council's internal divisions. A distinctive element of the plot involves the hunt for a dangerous magical weapon—a "soulfire bomb"—whose existence and deployment could devastate magical and mundane populations alike, escalating the stakes beyond individual lives to global catastrophe. Harry's efforts to clear Morgan's name lead him through Chicago's supernatural underbelly and to the mysterious, sentient prison island of Demonreach, a pivotal setting where ancient powers are held captive and crucial secrets are unearthed. "Turn Coat" delves deep into themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the complex nature of justice in a world where good and evil are rarely clear-cut. It further develops Harry's evolving role within the supernatural hierarchy, forcing him to make difficult choices that challenge his ethical code and test his allegiances as he confronts a truly existential threat. Butcher masterfully crafts a taut thriller that combines urban fantasy action with intricate political intrigue, showcasing the enduring moral struggles of its compelling protagonist.
