In "Truly Devious," Maureen Johnson masterfully intertwines mystery and young adult fiction, drawing readers into the enigmatic world of Ellingham Academy, a prestigious boarding school in Vermont. The academy, known for its focus on gifted students and its connection to a century-old unsolved crime, serves as the backdrop for the novel. The story is narrated by Stevie Bell, an aspiring true crime detective who is fascinated by the unsolved mystery of the school's founder, Albert Ellingham, and the disappearance of his wife and daughter in the 1930s amid a series of macabre letters signed "Truly Devious."
