『Truly Devious』要約

In "Truly Devious," Maureen Johnson masterfully intertwines mystery and young adult fiction, drawing readers into the enigmatic world of Ellingham Academy, a prestigious boarding school in Vermont. The academy, known for its focus on gifted students and its connection to a century-old unsolved crime, serves as the backdrop for the novel. The story is narrated by Stevie Bell, an aspiring true crime detective who is fascinated by the unsolved mystery of the school's founder, Albert Ellingham, and the disappearance of his wife and daughter in the 1930s amid a series of macabre letters signed "Truly Devious." Johnson employs a dual narrative framework, contrasting the present-day investigation with flashbacks to the past, enhancing the sense of intrigue surrounding the Ellingham case. Stevie, armed with her sharp intelligence and determination, becomes engrossed in solving both the historical mystery and a new murder that echoes the original crime. Her character is marked by her insecurities and her passion for understanding the psychology behind criminal acts, making her relatable and nuanced. As the plot unfolds, Stevie navigates complex relationships with her fellow students, each of whom has their unique quirks and backgrounds, adding depth to the story. The setting of the academy creates an isolated atmosphere, enhancing the feeling of suspense as Stevie pieces together clues that lead her closer to the truth. The book delves into themes of obsession, friendship, and the implications of uncovering dark secrets. In "Truly Devious," Johnson successfully blends clever plotting with engaging character development, leaving readers eager for the next installment in the series.
