Set primarily in contemporary England, the story revolves around Ellie Mack, a bright seventeen-year-old girl who mysteriously disappears one day, leaving her family shattered. The narrative moves between the past and present, interweaving Ellie’s last days with the present struggles of her mother, Laurel, who has grappled with the aftermath of her daughter's disappearance for over a decade. Laurel is a richly developed protagonist whose journey of grief and acceptance forms the backbone of the novel. As she attempts to rebuild her life, she becomes involved with a new romantic interest, Floyd, who has his own secrets that intertwine with her past. Jewell employs a dual-timeline structure that not only builds suspense but also deepens character development as the layers of the story unfold. The writing captures the emotive experiences of a family torn apart, revealing the long-lasting effects of loss and the complexity of human connections. As Laurel uncovers more about Ellie’s life and the people who surrounded her, readers are drawn into a web of intrigue that challenges perceptions of trust and the lengths to which a mother will go for closure.
