ملخص The Testament

John Grisham’s 1999 legal thriller *The Testament* centers on Troy Phelan, a ruthless, dying billionaire who stuns his family and lawyers by leaping to his death after signing a surprise will. Instead of dividing his roughly eleven billion dollar fortune among his grasping, litigious heirs, Phelan leaves nearly everything to an illegitimate daughter, Rachel Lane, a missionary living among the indigenous Wali tribe deep in the Pantanal wetlands of Brazil. The disinherited family, led by his scheming adult children and their attorneys, contests the will, setting up the novel’s central conflict between greed and genuine faith. Nate O’Riley, a washed-up, alcoholic lawyer from Washington, D.C., is dispatched by Phelan’s firm to find Rachel and inform her of her inheritance. His search takes him from the corridors of corporate law into the remote, mosquito-infested Brazilian wilderness, where he must locate a woman who has no interest in money. Grisham alternates between the legal maneuvering back in the United States and Nate’s physical and spiritual journey downriver, a structure that drives both the suspense and the moral arc. The novel explores themes of redemption, the corrupting pull of wealth, and the contrast between Phelan’s heirs and Rachel’s selfless service. As a legal thriller, it climaxes in courtroom battles over the validity of the handwritten will, but its emotional core lies in Nate’s struggle with addiction and his encounter with a faith he never expected.
