This trilogy consists of three books: "The Summer I Turned Pretty," "It's Not Summer Without You," and "We'll Always Have Summer." Set primarily in a beach town, the story unfolds at a summer getaway owned by the protagonist's family, where long-held traditions and complex relationships come to life. The main character, Isabella "Belly" Conklin, spends every summer at Cousins Beach with her mother and brother, along with their family friends, the Fishers. Throughout the trilogy, Belly navigates her feelings for two brothers, Conrad and Jeremiah Fisher, who symbolize the contrasting dynamics of first love and friendship. The narrative intricately weaves a love triangle that deepens as Belly confronts her evolving identity and emotional conflicts, particularly as she transitions from the innocence of youth into a more complicated sexual and emotional landscape. Each book encapsulates different aspects of Belly's growth, addressing her relationships with family, the pressures of adolescence, and the inevitable changes that come with growing older. Jenny Han employs vivid imagery and nostalgic tones to evoke the essence of summer, exploring how seasonal settings can serve as backdrops for the most pivotal moments in life. The trilogy is marked by its heartfelt exploration of the fragility of relationships, particularly under the looming shadow of loss and the passage of time, making it a resonant series for anyone reflecting on their own youthful experiences and the complexities of love during formative years.
