『The strain』要約

"The Strain," co-authored by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, is a fascinating blend of horror and thriller that reimagines the vampire genre through a modern lens. The novel begins with the arrival of a mysterious flight from Europe to New York City, which carries a lethal virus at its core — a strain that is poised to unleash chaos upon the world. The book is structured in a unique way, alternating between multiple perspectives that delve into the lives of its protagonists, including Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, the head of the CDC’s New York branch, and his team as they attempt to understand and combat the outbreak. Set in contemporary New York City, the narrative explores the gradual breakdown of societal norms as the strain spreads, transforming victims into vampiric creatures known as "Strigoi." One of the novel's distinctive frameworks is its emphasis on the intersection of science and folklore, drawing on mythological elements while rooting the story in modern-day epidemiology. Del Toro and Hogan demonstrate a thorough understanding of infectious diseases and their implications, emphasizing the urgency and desperation of the characters as they confront both scientific challenges and moral dilemmas. The protagonists, including Eph and his estranged wife, Kelly, along with a group of survivors, navigate a city gripped by panic and a rapidly evolving threat. The narrative examines themes of survival, fear, and the fragility of human civilization in the face of an insidious enemy. "The Strain" invites readers to ponder the darker aspects of human nature as they witness the collapse of order and the battle between good and evil in a world threatened by a new, terrifying reality.
