Timothy Snyder’s The Road to Unfreedom, published in 2018, is a work of political history and contemporary analysis that traces the rise of authoritarianism in Russia, Europe, and the United States. Snyder, a historian of Eastern Europe at Yale, builds the book around a contrast between two conceptions of time and politics: the “politics of inevitability,” a Western liberal faith in steady, linear progress, and the “politics of eternity,” a reactionary worldview that rejects reason and fixates on mythic national pasts. He argues that Russia, after the Soviet collapse, abandoned liberal reform and instead embraced this politics of eternity under Vladimir Putin, whose regime he presents as a durable system built on spectacle, falsification, and permanent confrontation with a supposed outside enemy. A central figure is the Russian theorist Ivan Ilyin, whose mystical nationalism Snyder identifies as a major intellectual influence on Putin’s ideology. The book also examines the 2013–2014 Euromaidan protests in Ukraine and Russia’s subsequent annexation of Crimea, treating Ukraine as a pivotal battleground between open and closed political orders. Snyder extends this framework to Europe and the United States, analyzing Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election and arguing that American political actors borrowed Kremlin-style techniques and narratives. He contends that unfreedom spreads not only through tanks but through disinformation, corruption, and the erosion of shared facts. The result is a warning about how democratic societies can slide toward authoritarianism when they lose faith in truth and the future.
