Саммари «The Reckoning»

John Grisham’s novel *The Reckoning* is a legal drama set primarily in rural Ford County, Mississippi, spanning from the 1920s through the 1940s. It opens in 1946 with Pete Banning, a decorated World War II veteran and respected cotton farmer, rising early, visiting his comatose wife Liza in the hospital, then driving into Clanton and calmly shooting the town’s Methodist minister, Dexter Bell, in broad daylight. Pete refuses to explain his motive or mount any real defense, leaving his family, his lawyer, and the community baffled. The narrative unfolds in three movements. The first follows the immediate aftermath, Pete’s arrest, and his stubborn silence as he awaits trial and sentencing while his adult children, Joel and Stella, and his sister Florry struggle to hold the family farm together. The second is a lengthy flashback to Pete’s experience as a guerrilla fighter in the Philippines during World War II, depicting his capture, the Bataan Death March, and survival alongside Filipino resistance fighters. These wartime chapters supply the buried trauma that shapes his postwar conduct. The third returns to the consequences for his family, particularly Joel and Stella, as they confront scandal, financial ruin, and their father’s secret. The novel’s central mystery is why a seemingly rational man commits a cold-blooded killing, with the answer withheld until late in the book. Grisham explores themes of honor, racial and social tensions in the Jim Crow South, the lingering damage of war, and the fragility of family reputation. Unlike Grisham’s typical courtroom thrillers, *The Reckoning* devotes more space to historical atmosphere and character study than to legal procedure.
