《The One and Only Ivan》摘要

"The One and Only Ivan," written by Katherine Applegate, is a poignant children's novel inspired by the true story of a gorilla named Ivan, who lived in captivity in a shopping mall. Set primarily in a dilapidated Earthbound mall in the United States, the narrative unfolds through Ivan's first-person perspective, showcasing his life in a small enclosure while reflecting on themes of friendship, freedom, and the experience of living in confinement. The story is structured around Ivan’s encounters with various characters, including Stella, an elderly elephant, and Ruby, a playful young elephant who becomes essential to his journey. Through their interactions, readers explore the emotional burden that Ivan carries and the deep bonds that can form even in the bleakest circumstances. Ivan has the ability to paint, and through this artistic outlet, he expresses his longing for freedom and the complexities of his past, offering a unique lens on his thoughts and feelings. The chapters are largely episodic, presenting vivid glimpses into Ivan's daily life, his relationships with other animals, and flashbacks to his early days in the wild. The narrative employs a blend of simplicity and depth, making it accessible for young readers while also poignant enough for adults. Moreover, it encourages conversations about animal rights and the moral implications of keeping wild animals in captivity. Overall, "The One and Only Ivan" is a heartfelt exploration of isolation, hope, and the transformative power of love, illustrating how one voice, no matter how small, can make an impact.
