"The Once and Future Witches" by Alix E. Harrow is a rich and evocative novel that intertwines the struggle for women's rights with the resurgence of witchcraft in a historical fantasy setting. Set in the late 19th century, in a world where witches are thought to be myths, the story takes place in the gloomy backdrop of New Salem, a city grappling with social upheaval and the suffragette movement. This unique narrative framework explores themes of feminism, sisterhood, and the reclamation of power through witchcraft. The novel follows three sisters, Beatrice, Agnes, and Juniper, who are determined to rewrite the narrative of witches and women in a society that has long suppressed them. Each sister embodies different aspects of strength and resilience, navigating personal traumas, familial bonds, and societal expectations. As they delve deeper into the world of witchcraft, they uncover forgotten spells and rituals that allow them to harness their collective power, aiming to unite women under the banner of witchcraft and rebellion. Harrow intricately weaves historical events and figures with the magical elements of the narrative, enriching the story with layers of feminist discourse. The witches engage in various experiments to recapture their identities and capabilities, from gathering strength from their ancestors to employing the old wives’ tales that have been dismissed as superstition.
