《The Maidens》摘要

In Alex Michaelides' novel "The Maidens," the narrative revolves around a psychological thriller infused with elements of Greek mythology and tragedy. The story is primarily set in the beautiful yet enigmatic backdrop of Cambridge University, where the prestigious institution's hallowed halls and lush gardens serve as a striking contrast to the dark themes of obsession and murder that unfold. The protagonist, Mariana Andros, is a group therapist grappling with her own past traumas, specifically the recent death of her beloved husband. Her life takes a dramatic turn when she becomes embroiled in a murder investigation centered around a member of her deceased husband’s family. The victim, a young woman named Zoe, is found dead, prompting Mariana to delve into the secretive and exclusive circle known as "The Maidens." This group, led by the charismatic and mysterious professor Edward Fosca, is steeped in cult-like dynamics and fueled by a passion for the classics, particularly the works of the ancient Greeks. As Mariana investigates the murder, she is haunted by the idea that the deaths may be linked to Fosca and his twisted interpretation of art, beauty, and tragedy. The novel is structured around her psychological unraveling, as she struggles with trust issues and her own mental state while uncovering layers of deception and connections among the characters. The exploration of grief, loyalty, and the lengths one will go to seek justice is central to the narrative, making "The Maidens" a gripping tale of intrigue and suspense that keeps readers guessing until the final pages.
