ملخص The long earth

"The Long Earth," a novel by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter, introduces a fascinating multiverse where countless parallel Earths exist, accessible through a device known as the "Stepper." The story begins in a near-future version of our world, where the invention of the Stepper allows people to traverse these alternate Earths, each with its own unique environments and challenges. This new ability leads to the phenomenon known as "The Long Earth," inviting humanity to explore infinite possibilities beyond their own planet. The narrative follows two main protagonists: Joshua Valienté, a “natural” Stepper who can move effortlessly between worlds without the device, and Lobsang, a self-aware artificial intelligence who has complex feelings about his existence. Together, they navigate the myriad Earths and the societal implications of stepping, including the questions surrounding colonization, resource exploitation, and the nature of humanity itself. The novel delves into various frameworks, such as the exploration of societal structures that emerge in different Earths and how individuals adapt to new environments. Throughout their journeys, the characters encounter diverse communities and challenges, including the struggle of “non-steppers” who cannot access the parallel worlds. The book raises significant philosophical questions about identity, existence, and the consequences of technological advancements. As Joshua and Lobsang explore, they also grapple with the moral implications of freedom and the responsibilities that come with unbounded exploration. "The Long Earth" sets the stage for a thought-provoking adventure that combines Pratchett’s trademark humor with serious commentary on human nature and societal evolution.
