The story follows Maria Merryweather, a young girl who, after the death of her father, moves to a beautiful but mysterious estate called Moonacre Manor, which she has inherited from her uncle. The enchanting landscape is filled with lush forests, hidden valleys, and animals with extraordinary personalities, providing a rich backdrop for the unfolding narrative. Goudge crafts a tale steeped in fantasy and folklore, where themes of love, courage, and the battle between good and evil are central. A distinctive feature of the novel is its emphasis on the transformative power of kindness and understanding, embodied in Maria's character, who is both curious and compassionate. The chapter structure often intertwines Maria’s personal growth with the resolution of the age-old conflicts that permeate Moonacre Manor, especially the tension between the generations of the De Noire family and the supernatural elements that haunt the estate. The titular character, the Little White Horse, symbolizes purity and hope, guiding Maria through her adventures and helping her navigate the challenges she faces. Alongside her captivating encounters with a host of endearing characters, including the wise old man called the Old Parson and the enigmatic boy, Robin, Maria's journey is one of self-discovery and resilience.
