Resumen de The Immortalists

In "The Immortalists" by Chloe Benjamin, the narrative follows the lives of four siblings—Varya, Daniel, Klara, and Simon Gold—whose destinies are shaped by an enigmatic prophecy. Set against the backdrop of New York City from the 1960s to the 2000s, the story unfolds after the siblings visit a mysterious fortune teller who reveals the dates of their deaths. This chilling foretelling prompts each sibling to grapple with the implications of their mortality and leads them to make life choices influenced by the knowledge of their predetermined fates. The novel explores deeply personal themes of life, love, and the existential weight of knowing one's end, each chapter serving as a vignette illustrating how each sibling responds differently to their foreseen destinies. Simon, the youngest, embraces a hedonistic lifestyle in pursuit of joy and connection, while Klara, a magician, seeks to create an illusion of control over life itself. Varya, the eldest, becomes a scientist, fixated on extending life through her research, while Daniel, the mediator, struggles with the balance between his family's well-being and his personal desires. Through the lens of the Gold siblings, Benjamin examines the intersection of fate and free will, the burdens of knowledge, and the quest for immortality—not in the literal sense, but in the ways individuals leave their marks on the world. The starkly rich characters and their relatable struggles resonate with readers, eliciting reflections on how the awareness of mortality influences the choices we make. "The Immortalists" is a profound exploration of life, purpose, and the human condition, inviting readers to contemplate their own lives in the face of inevitable mortality.
