ملخص The Hired Girl

Laura Amy Schlitz's historical novel, *The Hired Girl*, chronicles the transformative year of Joan Skraggs, a fourteen-year-old farm girl from rural Pennsylvania, in 1913 Baltimore. The entire narrative unfolds through Joan's meticulously kept diary entries, offering an intimate first-person perspective on her rapid coming-of-age. Escaping a life of drudgery and an abusive home environment, Joan ventures to the city with meager belongings and a fierce determination to make her own way. She secures a position as a domestic servant—a "hired girl"—for the affluent, intellectual, and culturally sophisticated Rosenbach family, who are Jewish. This placement immediately sets up a dynamic exploration of class, religion, and social etiquette, as Joan, a devout Catholic with limited worldly experience, navigates a household rich in art, literature, and academic pursuits entirely foreign to her. Her entries detail her demanding daily chores, from cooking and cleaning to caring for the family's young daughter, but also her profound observations on the family's customs, conversations, and intellectual life. Schlitz uses Joan's diary to illuminate the stark social stratification of the early 20th century, the role of women, and the burgeoning ideas of education and self-improvement for those from humble backgrounds. Joan's burgeoning intellect and voracious curiosity are evident as she educates herself through the Rosenbachs' library and learns to articulate her evolving understanding of faith, love, prejudice, and justice. The diary format itself becomes an experiment in self-discovery, allowing readers to witness Joan's voice mature and her worldview expand as she grapples with new experiences and challenges in a complex, rapidly changing urban environment.
