『The essential Calvin and Hobbes』要約

"The essential Calvin and Hobbes" collects a significant portion of Bill Watterson's beloved comic strip, first published in 1988. This treasury offers an extensive compilation of daily black-and-white strips and full-color Sunday strips, showcasing the foundational years of the series. At its heart are the adventures of Calvin, a mischievous, highly imaginative six-year-old boy, and his best friend Hobbes, a tiger who is a stuffed animal to everyone else but a sentient, philosophical companion in Calvin's eyes. This unique dynamic forms the core framework, blurring the lines between reality and Calvin's elaborate inner world. The book captures Calvin's myriad escapades, from his daily battles with school and chores to his grand, often chaotic, experiments. Readers witness the inception and development of many iconic elements that define the strip. Calvin frequently transforms into alter-egos like Spaceman Spiff, battling aliens across the galaxy, or Stupendous Man, heroically protecting the innocent. His ingenuity also manifests in inventions like the Transmogrifier, a cardboard box capable of changing anything, or the duplicator, creating clones to do his bidding. His imaginative spirit further fuels the constantly evolving rules of Calvinball, the bizarre and often profound snow sculptures he creates, and the perilous, philosophical journeys he embarks on with Hobbes in their wagon or sled. Beyond the antics, Watterson imbues Calvin with a precocious, often cynical, intellect. The strip frequently explores complex philosophical questions about human nature, art, consumerism, and the environment through Calvin's unique perspective, often clashing with the sensible girl next door, Susie Derkins, or the exasperated adults in his life. "The essential Calvin and Hobbes" serves as an enduring testament to the power of imagination and a poignant, humorous commentary on childhood and the absurdities of the adult world, making it a definitive introduction to Watterson's unparalleled creation.
