《The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time》摘要

Mark Haddon's novel *The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time* is narrated by fifteen-year-old Christopher Boone, who lives in Swindon, England, with his father. Christopher describes himself as a mathematician with behavioural difficulties—widely understood as autism—and the book is written in his distinctive first-person voice. The story opens when he discovers the neighbour's dog, Wellington, killed with a garden fork, and he decides to investigate the murder, modelling his detective work on Sherlock Holmes stories. The novel's structure is one of its most distinctive features. Christopher numbers his chapters using prime numbers rather than consecutive integers, explaining that he likes primes because they are logical and difficult to divide. He includes diagrams, mathematical puzzles, timetables, and digressions about astronomy, chess, and the Monty Hall problem, so the book functions as a kind of hybrid between a detective story and an autobiographical notebook. Christopher's narration is literal and precise; he struggles to interpret facial expressions, metaphors, and social cues, which shapes how every event is reported to the reader. The plot extends beyond the initial mystery: as Christopher pursues his investigation, he uncovers difficult truths about his own family, including secrets his father has kept from him. This leads him to undertake a frightening solo journey to London. Haddon has described the book as a novel about difference, truth, and bravery rather than a treatise on autism. Published in 2003, it won the Whitbread Book of the Year and has been adapted into a stage play. Its depiction of Christopher's inner world remains its defining achievement.
