Its central metaphor is the "cloud of unknowing" that hangs between the seeker and God, paired with a "cloud of forgetting" placed beneath the seeker to blot out all created things and even the self. The author insists that the highest work of the contemplative life is a naked intention toward God, expressed through a single short word such as "God" or "sin," repeated as a prayer. Discursive meditation on God's attributes, while useful for beginners, must eventually be abandoned, because the intellect cannot grasp what God is.
