The central protagonist is a velveteen rabbit, a gift to a young boy, who longs to become "real." The narrative is set primarily in the boy's nursery, a warm and comforting place filled with various toys, which serves as the backdrop for the rabbit’s emotional journey. The story unfolds through the lens of the rabbit’s experiences and interactions with other toys, notably the more experienced and wise old Skin Horse, who represents the wisdom of growing up and understanding love. The rabbit learns about the transformative power of love and how it can make one truly "real." A significant framework of the book involves the concept of becoming real through being loved, which is articulated through the rabbit's desire to achieve a deeper connection with the boy. As the rabbit navigates the ups and downs of life in the nursery, he faces challenges that test his resilience and hopes. A poignant experiment within the narrative is the rabbit's attempt to understand what it means to be real, culminating in a magical yet emotional journey that emphasizes the value of genuine affection over superficial appearances.
