《The Catcher in the Rye》摘要

J.D. Salinger's novel The Catcher in the Rye is narrated by Holden Caulfield, a sixteen-year-old who recounts the days following his expulsion from Pencey Prep, a boarding school in Pennsylvania. The book is structured as a first-person retrospective; Holden tells his story from a California institution where he is undergoing treatment, addressing an unnamed listener in a colloquial, digressive voice that has become one of the novel's defining features. The plot follows Holden's decision to leave Pencey early and spend several days in New York City before returning home, rather than face his parents immediately. He checks into a hotel, drifts through bars, nightclubs, and taxi rides, and encounters a series of people: his roommate Stradlater, his neighbor Ackley, the prostitute Sunny, his old acquaintance Sally Hayes, and his younger sister Phoebe, whom he visits in secret. Throughout, Holden fixates on the phoniness of adults and the loss of childhood innocence, particularly through his relationship with Phoebe and his deceased brother Allie, whose baseball mitt covered in poems serves as a recurring symbol. The title derives from Holden's wish to be "the catcher in the rye," a guardian who saves children from falling off a cliff. Published in 1951, the novel is set largely in New York City and is noted for its slang, its themes of alienation, and its place in the literary canon. It remains Salinger's best-known work.
