《The Broker》摘要

John Grisham’s 2005 novel *The Broker* centers on Joel Backman, a disgraced Washington power broker and former lobbying kingpin who was imprisoned after threatening to reveal secrets tied to a classified satellite system. The story opens with Backman receiving an unexpected pardon in the final hours of a lame-duck presidency—a reprieve engineered not out of mercy but as bait. The CIA, acting on orders from the outgoing president, secretly plants Backman in Italy, leaks his whereabouts to interested parties, and waits to see which foreign intelligence service will try to kill him first, thereby revealing who benefited from his suppressed knowledge. That premise drives the novel’s distinctive structure: much of the book is a cat-and-mouse surveillance thriller set in Bologna, where Backman, stripped of his identity and resources, must learn Italian and blend into local life while unaware he is being watched by multiple agencies. Grisham uses the Italian setting unusually heavily for a legal thriller, weaving in language lessons, café culture, and the mechanics of hiding in plain sight. The cast includes CIA operative Luigi, Backman’s handler, and various European intelligence figures circling the target. Unlike Grisham’s courtroom dramas, *The Broker* focuses on espionage tradecraft, political leverage, and the ethics of using a man as expendable intelligence bait rather than on trials or verdicts. The novel explores how power operates through secrets, patronage, and quiet deals long after public figures fall from grace.
