Resumen de The Autobiography of Malcolm X

The Autobiography of Malcolm X, co-authored with journalist Alex Haley and published in 1965, traces Malcolm Little’s transformation from a childhood marked by his father’s death and his mother’s institutionalization to his life as a Harlem hustler known as “Detroit Red,” his imprisonment, and his conversion to the Nation of Islam while in prison. The narrative unfolds across distinct settings—Lansing, Boston, Harlem, Charlestown State Prison, and later Detroit and New York—each marking a stage in his political and spiritual evolution. A central framework is his account of racial pride and self-reliance under Elijah Muhammad, whom he served as a national spokesman. The book details his rise in the Nation of Islam, his marriage to Betty Shabazz, and his growing public prominence. It also recounts his pilgrimage to Mecca, where he encountered Muslims of many races, prompting a shift toward orthodox Sunni Islam and a broader view of racial unity. His later travels in Africa and his founding of the Organization of Afro-American Unity reflect this change. The autobiography closes with Haley’s epilogue describing Malcolm’s assassination in 1965, leaving readers with the voice of a figure still evolving. The work remains a foundational text in African American biography and political thought.
