『The Absolute Sandman, Vol. 1』要約

"The Absolute Sandman, Vol. 1" by Neil Gaiman is the first in a highly acclaimed series that collects the entirety of "The Sandman" comic book series, originally published by DC Comics' Vertigo imprint. This edition features the first 20 issues of the series, which were originally released between 1989 and 1991, along with additional material, including sketches and annotations. The central framework revolves around Morpheus, also known as Dream of the Endless, who governs the realm of dreams and is tasked with maintaining balance across dreams, stories, and reality. The narrative begins with Morpheus's imprisonment after a failed occult ritual, which sets off a chain of events affecting both the dreamworld and the waking world. The book introduces a rich tapestry of characters, including the other members of the Endless family—Death, Desire, Despair, and others—each embodying a different aspect of existence. As Morpheus navigates his own redemption and encounters both allies and adversaries, the stories explore profound themes such as identity, change, and the fluid boundaries between dreams and reality. Key chapters include the stories that unveil Morpheus's past, his complex relationships, and the consequences of his actions on both mortals and his fellow Endless. Set against various backdrops that range from ancient myth to modern landscapes, "The Absolute Sandman, Vol. 1" interweaves mythology, horror, and fantasy, showcasing Gaiman's distinctive narrative style and his ability to blend various literary genres. This volume not only sets the stage for Morpheus’s adventures but also invites readers to reflect on the nature of dreams and storytelling itself.
